This standard specifies four procedures for the determination of the lead content of automotive gasoline, where the lead is present as lead alkyl combined with CB-type scavenge material (alkyl halide). The choice of procedure is dependent upon the lead content range of the gasoline under analysis and the instrument X-ray source. Two lead content ranges are specified, namely a high range of 0,01 gPb/l to 0,50 gPb/l, and a low range of 0,002 gPb/l to 0,020 gPb/l (20 mgPb/l to 200 mgPb/l).

The results of analysis are dependent upon the ratio of lead to bromine being constant for the calibration and test samples, and thus it is only applicable when the scavenger type is known, and samples containing alternative scavengers (e.g. B-type) will require separate calibration curves. The method is particularly- suitable for control of blending operations.

Oxygenated components of gasolines, such as alcohols or ethers, may interfere with the results of this method. Differences in density and sulfur content between the test portion under analysis and the diluent mixture used for the preparation of calibration solutions can lead to errors in the result of the test.
