This standard describes a method for the determination of the viscosity of distillate fuels, residual fuels, and used oils as well as other transparent and opaque liquids using a computer controlled automatic capillary viscometer.
The kinematic viscosity is calculated from the dynamic viscosity by dividing by the density at the test temperature. The density is either determined at the same time as the dynamic viscosity automatically or by a standard test method.
The automatic capillary viscometer is suitable for determining viscosity in the temperature range 20°C to 100°C. Viscosity index is calculated from the kinematic viscosity values at 40°C and 100°C.
