Traditionally, aviation jet fuel has been derived from crude petroleum. The long-term availability of this fossil source has always been of concern, and alternative fuels are needed- the main driver being the reduction, and eventual elimination, of combustion-generated atmospheric pollutants.

This book covers both the supplemental aviation jet fuels derived from coal, natural gas and biomatter, together with the substitutes represented by biofuels and hydrogen. The combination of gas-turbine engines and alternative fuels should permit civil aviation to endure well into the future.
