IP 346: Determination of polycyclic aromatics in unused lubricating base oils and asphaltene free petroleum fractions - Dimethyl sulphoxide extraction refractive index method
- Method adopted/last revised: 1992
- Method reapproved: 2004
- REF/ISBN: IP346-2935507
- Status: Current
- First printed in STM books: January 1992

Scope
This document specifies a method of test for the determination of polycyclic aromatics (PCA) over the concentration range 1-15 % (m/m) in unused additive free lubricating base oils having an atmospheric boiling point of 300 °C minimum at 5 % recovered sample.
This method may apply to PCA concentrations outside this range and to other asphaltene-free petroleum fractions, but the precision has not been determined.
NOTE - For the purposes of this standard, the terms "% (m/m)" and "% (V/V)" are used to represent respectively the mass fraction and the volume fraction.
