This technical bulletin provides an update to best practice recommended in Guidelines for the investigation of the microbial content of petroleum fuels and for the implementation of avoidance and remedial strategies.

Diesel fuels containing fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) can have an increased susceptibility to microbial growth, which leads to diesel contamination and blocked fuel lines. This bulletin considers which fuels are commonly affected, the characteristics of FAME that make it susceptible to microbial growth and what measures can be taken to prevent this.

Please note: this publication has been superseded by Guidelines for the investigation of the microbial content of petroleum fuels and for the implementation of avoidance and remedial strategies
