Too often, human and organisational factors are an ‘afterthought’ in company safety management systems (SMSs). By squarely embedding human and organisational factors expectations into the SMS, organisations can ensure that the resources and activities required to manage this topic are in place at an early stage of the development of a projects.

This publication was written to help organisations to embed the management of human and organisational factors into the SMS. For each of the 20 elements of the EI’s Process Safety Management framework, a separate set of ‘human factors’ expectations has been developed. These have been designed to be practical and are, in essence, what the organisation needs to achieve as a minimum in order to manage human and organisational factors effectively.

In order to help organisations meet these expectations, tables are provided for each element detailing the key activities to undertake, along with high-level guidance to get the organisation started, and the key industry guidance or standards to use. Furthermore, a list of key performance indicators are provided, as well as common issues to watch out for.

This document has been written for health, safety and environment (HS&E) managers, process safety engineers and human factors specialists, as well as others who may be responsible for implementing an SMS.
