The world of metrology covers a myriad of topics and technologies. Even in the petroleum industry, different substances are measured in different ways. However, a large proportion of petroleum is measured whilst being moved through pipelines, thus there is a need for engineers that understand the concepts of dynamic measurement, more so than static measurement.
The Hydrocarbon Management sub-committee 1 (HMC 1) which has members from the upstream petroleum industry identified the need for a formal training regime and became aware that the Institute of Measurement and Control (InstMC) was also developing a syllabus so both Institutes combined their efforts to create this document. It was realised that the framework of the syllabus could be applied to the English Apprenticeship scheme so it was decided to base the syllabus around the Level 5 apprenticeship ST0283; Senior Metrology Technician. It is envisaged that the course will be delivered in modular form by training providers. Whilst the document has been compiled by experts in the oil industry, the training suggested will be applicable to other industries where dynamic measurement is used.
