The number of test methods for the determination of density, water and sediment content of crude oils, petroleum products and related products and fuels has increased markedly over the years as more sophisticated techniques and technologies have become available. As a result of the multiplicity of methods, users have found it difficult to assess which method may be best suited to a specific application. This guidance has therefore been prepared to furnish a concise overview of the different methods available.

This guideline provides a synopsis of laboratory test methods for the determination of density, water content and sediment content for use in the quantity measurement of crude oil and residual fuel oils. It references relevant IP Test Methods and gives a brief outline of each method of test, its range of application and information on its precision. The document also includes references of related or technically equivalent standards published by other standardisation bodies, such as, ISO, API, ASTM, AFNOR and DIN. The test methods outlined within this document are used for calculating the net standard volumes
