One of the findings of a recent EI JIP which looked in to the performance of water finding pastes and probes in determining the interface between crude oil and water in static tanks (ship and shore tanks) was that the performance of both methods was severely impaired with certain crude oils. The grades concerned adhered to the water finding rule (which carries the paste) or the electronic probe and were pulled down into the water layer, preventing the water from being reliably detected by either paste or probe.

A study is proposed to investigate this phenomenon with the aim of determining the limiting parameters (density and viscosity) at which it becomes a significant problem.
