This document is intended for guidance and contains recommendations for safe practices to be used as a model for development of policy in constructing HPHT wells. It is in no way a directive, regulation, or law.

This document is not intended as a complete guide to well construction and management. It assumes that the user has reasonable knowledge and experience in normally pressured, normal temperature (NPNT) wells. This document highlights differences in tackling wells that have abnormally HPHTs. Where advice is given or recommendations made, they are to be understood as supplementary to normal good practices, or (in a few cases) as a replacement for normal practices. Where technical details are required, they are included as brief overviews in Annex A, with references given for more detailed information.

All the guidance is based on the direct experience of the authors in designing and construction of HPHT wells across exploration, appraisal and development projects, and is intended to support and inform new teams based on lessons learned and the desire to see safe and successful future HPHT projects.
