This guidance is intended to establish common standards for defining and naming operating limits of retail fuel storage tanks and provides guidance on how to link these to maximum working capacity terminology used in other UK guidance and approved code of practices (ACOPs); including HSE Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations Approved Code of Practice and Guidance L133 Unloading petrol from road tankers, 2nd ed, 2014.

This guidance is appropriate for any site where overfill prevention devices (OPD) and/or high level alarms are fitted. The guidance explains the reasons for establishing operating limits for fuel storage tanks and the methodology to calculate them.
