Fire resistance of mudwings for petroleum road tankers

This publication provides a minimum fire resistance standard for petroleum road tanker mudwings where these provide protection for the cargo tank against tyre fires. The intention of the fire resistance test is to ensure that mudwings that pass the test will provide protection of cargo tanks from tyre fires for the minimum twenty minutes needed to give time for fire fighting assistance to arrive at the scene of an incident in the UK.
The second edition includes the original report of the programme of testing undertaken by Warrington Fire Research at the request of the EI, and a revised test protocol which differs from that included in the first edition by:
- requiring that three specimens are tested;
- allowing a further two specimens to be tested should one of the three specimens fail to meet the required criteria; and
- removing the requirement for a heat flux meter.
These changes do not have any effect on the performance criteria, so that results of tests conducted to the protocol contained in the first edition of the publication remain valid. This publication is an essential reference for mudwing manufacturers, petroleum road tanker manufacturers and tanker operators, both in the UK and internationally.
