A review of two research projects, carried out at the University of Birmingham and the University of Newcastle, as part of the Automation of subsea tasks and the Enhancement technologies for underwater vehicles managed programmes. The results obtained from this research represents a significant advance in the performance of subsea acoustic communication systems (both for fixed systems and moving AUVs) and open up a new range of potential applications.
