SafetyOn is the health and safety organisation for the onshore wind industry. SafetyOn takes an evidence-based approach to understanding the risks in the onshore wind industry and uses that to inform workstreams with the purpose of reducing health and safety risks. One of SafetyOn’s main work areas is the SbD programme, which brings experts together to collaborate on specific identified issues in a focused effort to reduce risk within the onshore wind industry through better design.
SafetyOn identified chain hoists as a focus topic for an SbD workshop covering the following key considerations:
- Design of chain hoists and ancillary equipment.
- Training and competence across the industry in the use of chain hoists.
- Documentation used during statutory inspections of chain hoists.
- Chain hoist lift plans, permits and controls.
The approach taken to deliver the workshop and this report included:
- An incident data review.
